Travel insurance, explained.
The EHIC card gives access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries, but it doesn't cover private treatment, repatriation, cancellation, lost baggage or liability. Travel insurance fills all of those gaps and is strongly recommended even for short EU trips.
As soon as you book your trip. Cancellation cover only starts from the day you buy the policy so if you book six months ahead and buy insurance a week before departure, you're unprotected for that entire period.
You must declare all pre-existing conditions at the time of buying the policy. Most can be covered for an additional premium; some serious conditions may be excluded. Full and honest disclosure is essential failure to declare can void your claim.
No cancellation is covered for specific insured reasons such as illness, injury, bereavement or jury service. "Any reason" cancellation is available as an optional upgrade on some policies, usually for an additional premium.
Yes baggage cover typically applies from the moment you check in until you collect your bags at the destination. If your airline loses your luggage, you claim from the airline first, then from your travel insurer for the shortfall. Always keep receipts and file a PIR report at the airport.
